Pendulum I

Wood

30” x 9”

$700

A pendulum can provoke us to consider time.  It is apt that the black walnut in this piece came from a tree that died and had to be taken down.  The maple is from a tree I witnessed falling as high winds tore through my yard.

Café Wall IV

Wood

61” x 17” x 1.75

$2900

Take several steps back from this piece and observe it. Look up and down at it and see the unexpected movement!

While the rows on this sculpture are staggered, they are all parallel. That they converge, bend, and move is known as the “Café Wall Illusion.”

Hiding

Wood

22.5” x 5.75”

$425

The wood pieces making up this sculpture are all solid throughout.

A zipper is always hiding something, isn’t it?  I find the beauty of this piece is in its simplicity.  Honestly, it’s one of my favorite creations, and it makes me smile every time I see it!

Self-Made?

Wood

22” x 6.5”

$425

This sculpture is made from individual, solid pieces of mahogany, maple, and purpleheart.

Is anyone a self-made person?  This is a question I’ve pondered for many years, and this piece is made to evoke the question.

Whispers II

Wood

42” x 7”

$1300

My Whispers series showcases the beauty of our local hardwoods. I am always in awe at how the maple, cherry, and black walnut used in Whispers can become so soft and warm. This is what I want the viewer to experience.
When you step outside of View, you will be surrounded by more of these trees than can be counted. Their natural color, texture, and grain make them among the best hardwoods in the world.

Simply

Wood

81” x 11” x 10”

$2900

I’m drawn to the beauty of our hardwoods in and around the Adirondacks. These rugged trees give us such strikingly beautiful lumber which is unique to each tree and the conditions it lived through. Along with their visual beauty, I strive to expose the tactile beauty of these woods. They can be so soft and smooth that they invite you to touch them. In creating this piece, my goal was to use simple, soft lines that allow the viewer to experience the beauty of these trees. The woods become the center of attention.

The black walnut in Simply comes from a tree that grew on the grounds of a majestic home that was once the Clinton Liberal Institute. This was a private school for girls and was attended by Clara Barton, who was a Civil War nurse and founder of the American Red Cross. This giant walnut had lived past its natural lifespan and was taken down.

Deeply Rooted I

Wood

22” x 15.5” x 1.5”

$2200

Many of the beautiful hardwoods I use come from trees which nature has culled. A tornado uprooted one. One was a victim of Hurricane Ian. This piece, Deeply Rooted, was created from a tremendous gnarly, century-old maple that had reached the end of its lifespan. It was dying and dropping limbs on a friend's driveway, so it needed to come down.

Inspired by the tree's majesty and the beauty of its wood, I thought that creating a tree from it would be a fitting way for this maple to live on.

Café Wall #2 - Curved

Wood

57” x 15” x 2.5”

$2900

Take several steps back from this piece and observe it. Look up and down at it and see the unexpected movement!

While the rows on this sculpture are staggered, they are all parallel to each other. That they converge, bend, and move is known as the “Café Wall Illusion.” It has also been known as the “Shifted Checkerboard Figure” and “Kindergarten Illusion” since it was sometimes seen in the weaving of kindergarten students. This title was inspired by a café in Bristol, England. There, bricks in a wall are painted black and white, creating this illusion.

Having seen drawings of this illusion many times over the years, I was motivated to make it come to life in three dimensions.
